Emergent’s Dr. Timmons elected to Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors

Recently, we received the news that Dr. Richard Timmons, Chief Scientist at an Emergent Technologies portfolio company, AeonClad Coatings, has been elected a Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors. He will accept the honor at NAI’s Annual Meeting this week in Pasadena.

It is well-deserved recognition.

The National Academy of Inventors Fellow status is accorded to academic inventors who have “demonstrated a prolific spirit of innovation in creating or facilitating outstanding inventions that have made a tangible impact on quality of life, economic development, and the welfare of society.” Dr. Timmons certainly has accomplished this.

His work has focused on surface chemistry, specifically the development and application of technology to provide molecular surface tailoring of materials. He developed a patented pulsed plasma surface modification process (licensed to AeonClad Coatings) that is used to functionalize nanoparticles, leading to manufacturing improved inorganic/organic composite materials.

In addition to his role as Chief Scientist, Dr. Timmons is a Distinguished Professor of

Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of Texas at Arlington (UTA). His research interests include surface chemistry, chemistry of plasma systems, catalysis, coatings technology, photochemistry and chemical kinetics. He is an inventor of over ten U.S. patents in addition to numerous foreign filings. His work has been funded by federal agencies including the National Institute of Health, Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, and the Department of Defense.

AeonClad was founded on Dr. Timmons’ pioneering research. Formed in 2007, AeonClad developed an advanced coating technology platform to control the interaction of novel materials with their local environments. Since then, the company has continued to grow. Today the company is deploying this novel technology to solve a multitude of problems in industrial and consumer markets where additive compatibility is key to success. Examples include the processing of PTFE, TiO2, pigments, metals, ceramics, and numerous other additives.

His inventions continue to be game changers for coatings technology. And his ideas and energy are an integral part of AeonClad Coatings and Emergent Technologies.
